M-32 Balsa Wood Yam Mask

Wosera, Southern Abelam, PNG.

This yam mask was collected in the 1960s by Ron and Barbara Perry. The Abelam was a favourite destination for their collecting trips to PNG. And later, Barabara had an amazing collection of Abelam art at her home in Sydney. The balsa yam masks are not as common as the woven type and have their own robust aesthetic.

This mask is more rounded-rectangular in form, with a similar loop at the back for attachment to the yam. The colours are more subtle being a pale orange with white and black highlights.
